Information Mastery: A Practical Approach to Evidence-Based Medicine

ACCREDITATION

Physicians: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) and Tufts Health Care Institute. TUSM is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
Tufts University School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 20.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Of the 20.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™, a maximum of 3.75 hours of instruction are designated for MA risk management credit.
Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family
Physicians. Determination of credit is pending.

Nurses: Tufts University School of Medicine Office of Continuing Education is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s COA.

This activity provides 20.5 Contact Hours for nurses. Partial credit is not available for nurses.

Pharmacists: Tufts University School of Medicine Office of Continuing Education is Text Box:
 accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This program is available for 14 contact hours on Day 1 & 2, Universal Program Number: 0054-9999-10-004-L01-P. This program is available for 6.5 contact hours on Day 3, Universal Program Number: 0054-9999-10-005-L01-P. Partial credit for pharmacists is available for attending the Applied Skills Course only or the Workshop only.

Course Goal for the Applied Skills Course (Days 1 & 2):
To help learners acquire the core concepts and skills of information mastery — i.e., to find, evaluate and apply the best evidence for everyday practice.
Educational Objectives—At the conclusion of this course, learners should be able to:
• Identify and validate patient-oriented evidence that matters (POEMS);
• Evaluate a research study for validity and relevance in relation to diagnostic testing and treatment;
• Evaluate practice guidelines and other expert-based resources;
• Use computer-based sources of medical information and searchable databases to obtain and apply valid, relevant, state-of-the-art information at the point of care;
• Identify barriers and solutions to implementing evidence-based care in their own practices.

Course Goal for Workshop on Teaching and Leading EBM (Day 3):
To provide teachers of health care professionals with instruction and practice in teaching information mastery. Instructional materials will be provided for use at the learner’s home institutions.
Educational Objectives—At the conclusion of this course, learners should be able to:
• Describe common problems and solutions associated with teaching information mastery concepts and techniques;
• Identify teaching opportunities in a clinical environment, including inpatient and ambulatory practice settings;
• Explain and apply alternative approaches to teaching information mastery, such as through modifications of the traditional Journal Club format.

TO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THIS ACTIVITY AND RECEIVE CE CREDITS/CONTACT HOURS YOU MUST:
Sign-in for Day 1 & 2 and/or Day 3, and complete and submit a program evaluation. Certificates/statements of credit will be issued by mail within 4-6 weeks.

CANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY
Cancellation of conference registration must be requested in writing and postmarked or emailed to thci@thci.org no later than October 22, 2010. Refunds, less a $75 administrative fee per registrant, will be issued. Cancellation/ refund requests will not be granted after October 22, 2010. Registrants who do not cancel by October 22, 2010 and do not attend are responsible for the full registration fee. There is no penalty for substituting one attendee for another at any time. Registration substitutions will be accepted with written notification from the original registrant (via mail or email at thci@thci.org). In the unlikely event that THCI cancels the conference, registration fees will be refunded.
