Curriculum Framework and Instructional Materials as Related to Competencies and Learning Objectives in Medical Education

Overview

THCI Curriculum Domains, Related ACGME and AAMC Competencies, and THCI Instructional Materials (PDF Format - 6 pages)

This table displays the content areas and curriculum domains in THCI's curriculum framework, along with related instructional materials. The table lists four sets of THCI instructional materials:

  • Online: Modules available in THCI's Center for Online Learning.
  • CD-ROM: "Understanding Managed Care: Learning the Essentials Through Case Presentations".
  • Curriculum Guide: Sessions featured in the "Curriculum Guide on Managing Care: A Systems-Based Approach." The guide is scheduled for release in mid-2002.
  • Courseware (Preparing Physicians-in-Training To Succeed): Faculty guides and teaching materials on the defined topics.

Descriptions of these and other THCI resources can be found under "Programs and Products." In addition, the table cross-references the 10 THCI domains with the competencies cited as training goals for medical schools and residency programs by the following:

  • Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Outcome Project (six general competencies)
  • Association of American Medical Colleges Graduate Medical Education Core Curriculum (five domains)
  • Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Medical School Objectives Project (MSOP) (four attributes of physicians and related topics)

Summary of Linkages between THCI Curriculum Domains and ACGME General Competencies (PDF Format - 2 pages)

This table summarizes the linkages between THCI's 10 curriculum domains and the six competency areas defined by Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Outcome Project, www.acgme.org.

Detailed Linkages to ACGME and AAMC Competencies

Index of ACGME Competencies and THCI Curriculum and Selected Materials (PDF Format - 7 pages)

Index of AAMC GME Core Curriculum Domains and THCI Curriculum and Selected Materials (PDF Format - 5 pages)

Index of AAMC Medical School Objectives Project (MSOP) Objectives and THCI Curriculum and Selected Materials (PDF Format - 6 pages)

Each of these three tables displays the linkages between the competencies or domains cited in the respective reports and the curriculum framework and selected instructional materials developed by THCI. For example, one of the six ACGME competency areas is "Practice-Based Learning & Improvement," with its overall goal that "residents must be able to investigate and evaluate their patient care practices, appraise and assimilate scientific evidence, and improve their patient care practices." Several of THCI's materials offer instruction in content, tools and techniques that address this requirement.

Online Modules and Competency Objectives

Index of THCI Online Modules and CD-ROM and Related ACGME and AAMC Competencies and Objectives (PDF Format - 9 pages)

This table aligns the online modules presented on THCI's website and THCI's CD-ROM, Understanding Managed Care, with the competencies and learning objectives defined in the three major reports of ACGME and AAMC. For example, THCI's online module "Quality Improvement Techniques" relates to a few objectives cited by ACGME, including the objective, "analyze practice experience and perform practice-based improvement activities using a systematic methodology" under the competency heading of "Practice-Based Learning & Improvement."
