John T. Harrington, MD is Dean of the Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM), a position he has held since November 1996. Prior to his current appointment, he was Dean for Academic Affairs at TUSM and served as Chief of Medicine at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Newton, MA. Dr. Harrington was also Director of the Hemodialysis Unit, Administrative Director of the Intensive Care Unit, and Chief of the General Medicine Division in the Department of Medicine at Tufts-New England Medical Center (Tufts-NEMC). He has held faculty appointments at Boston University School of Medicine.
A renowned nephrologist, Dr. Harrington developed the Hemodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis and Renal Transplant programs at Tufts-New England Medical Center. With colleagues from Boston University and Massachusetts General Hospital, he developed the first U.S. multi-center, randomized, clinical treatment trial in nephrology. He is a highly respected lecturer and prolific author of journal articles. In addition, he has authored the monthly "Nephrology Forum" in Kidney International and the book Consultation in Internal Medicine (2nd edition, October 1996). Dr. Harrington has served as Governor of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American College of Physicians; President of the National Kidney Foundation of Massachusetts; member of the Editorial Board of The New England Journal of Medicine; President of the Tufts Associated Health Plan IPA at Tufts-NEMC; and member of several academic and specialty societies. Dr. Harrington also is an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.
Dr. Harrington is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA and Yale University School of Medicine. He did his postgraduate training in internal medicine at North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill and in nephrology at Tufts-New England Medical Center. |
