Institutional subscribers to this state-of-the-art web-based learning program receive a range of instructional tools and resources, including several new components:

• online learning modules, authored by medical and content experts in the respective fields.
• self-assessments developed by nationally recognized content experts.
• associated Applied Learning Exercises (AppLEs) that enable residents to apply their learning in their day-to-day clinical settings (see below).
• personal online portfolios that allow faculty and residents to track, assess, and document progress (see below).
• extensive bibliographic resources available.

Applied Learning Exercises (AppLEs) are resident assignments that utilize step-by-step instructions to approach competency in the content areas presented in each of THCI's online modules.

• 10 of the online modules each have a set of 3 AppLEs. Each assigned exercise serves as a building block for the subsequent module-related AppLE.
• Each AppLE contains a resident assignment and a faculty guide that includes a set of assessment standards for faculty. After a resident has submitted the AppLE, faculty can complete an online assessment, which then resides in the resident's online portfolio (see below).
• AppLEs cite specific ACGME competency components along with their own unique set of goals and objectives. The assignments require residents to perform a variety of tasks in the clinical setting, such as:
  • observing and analyzing care patterns
  • investigating problems
  • researching treatments
  • collaborating with other clinicians
  • designing patient materials, and more
