Audiences Tufts Health Care Institute provides training and educational resources on care management for health care professionals who register for our open-enrollment programs or who are affiliated with organizations that contract with us for customized programs. We have provided solutions for a wide range of clients. Types of learners include: Practicing physicians Medical directors and other physician leaders Faculty at medical schools, residency programs, and nursing programs Medical students and residents Case managers, nurses and other clinicians Practice administrators and other non-clinical staff Pharmaceutical company managers, medical directors and account representatives Executives and managers at other health care companies and organizations   Other clients include Single hospitals and hospital systems Provider entities including independent practice associations, physician organizations and physician-hospital organizations, and integrated delivery systems Academic medical centers Graduate medical education programs Managed care organizations and other health insurers Pharmaceutical companies Government agencies Professional or business organizations   Accomplishments Since our launch in July 1995, THCI has conducted more than 150 educational programs A total of 5,400 participants have attended THCI programs More than 240 expert faculty have participated in our seminars and workshops locally, nationally, and internationally. The Institute has developed Preparing Physicians in Training to Succeed (PPTS), a four-unit curriculum on the essential components of managed care: Understanding Managed Care: Learning the Essentials through Case Presentations CD-ROM for four audiences; practitioners, primary care and surgical residents and medical students Practicing Patient-Centered Care in the Managed Care Environment Evaluating, Adapting and Using Clinical Practice Guidelines Model Managed Care Curriculum for a Rotation in a Community Practice and Managed Care Organization (MCO) This work was supported by a three-year, $1.3 million grant as part of the national Partnerships for Quality Education initiative sponsored by The Pew Charitable Trusts. THCI has developed the "Curriculum Guide in Managing Care: A Systems-Based Approach," an instructional resource for faculty to address the knowledge foundation for training physicians in the principles and practices of managing care and providing high quality and cost-effective care for patients and populations. The 12-session guide cross-references with the 28 competencies stated in ACGME Outcome Project. 1,800 copies of the CD-ROM Understanding Managed Care: Learning the Essentials Through Case Presentations have been distributed and implemented in national residency programs and organizations as a basic primer on managed care. THCI currently has 14 online modules, a Knowledge Assessment©, and a Managed Care Opinion Survey©. Applications and a portfolio for integrating the courseware into ongoing training programs and assessing the learning are currently under development. A consortium of academic programs around the country are integrating THCI online courses, assessments, and applications (under development) into their training programs. In November 1999, December 2000, and April 2002, THCI brought together its Online Advisory Committee, a group of national health care leaders interested in and knowledgeable about medical education and training as well as the development of innovative teaching tools, and published Proceedings of the meetings. THCI's leaders have collaborated with Tufts University School of Medicine to integrate managed care principles and practices into the school's core curriculum, problem-based learning cases, and clerkships Several hundred physicians from around the country and internationally have completed THCI's managed care survey regarding their participation in and attitudes towards managed care. Managed Care at a Glance, a glossary of terms and definitions and Managed Care Bibliography, a listing of relevant books, articles and websites are two reference tools available to program participants and other interested audiences The Institute collaborated with the American Association of Health Plans and The Lewin Group to convene a symposium, "Clinical Research and Managed Care: Strengthening Alliances," in 1998. The symposium was attended by representatives of academic health centers, managed care organizations, public and private funders and consumer groups In July 1998 THCI and Tufts University School of Medicine convened "Lessons from Three Health Care Markets: A Symposium for health care Leaders." An invited group of participants included leaders from health plans, provider organizations, governmental agencies, employer coalitions, academia and other involved parties. Their discussion on the evolution of three mature managed care markets and the implications for the nation's health care system is summarized in Proceedings Through presentations at regional and national meetings and articles in the health care literature, THCI has contributed to the ongoing movement to focus medical and nursing education on outcomes in competency-based education and the new ACGME competencies © 2004 Tufts Health Care Institute | Boston, MA | (617) 636-1000
